Top Five Engagement Session Tips

A nice warm fire, a plush cozy blanket, a glass of champagne. It's no wonder the holiday season is the most popular time of year to get engaged. Now that you've said "YES!" it's time to start thinking about all the little details that go into planning your perfect wedding, like your engagement photos.

Engagement photos aren't a must, however, the photos are great to use on your save the date cards (should you choose to send them) and they are fantastic practice for your wedding photos! Below are five tips to get you started on creating your perfect engagement session.

All the photos I decided to feature in this post are by Kelly Kaufman Photography. She is a traveling photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just love how she is able to capture each couple's love so perfectly. You can contact her here.

Engagement Session Tip 1: Choose a photographer whose style appeals to you

When it comes to photographers there is no shortage. Each one has their own unique style. Do your research by checking out their website and social media. Do their photos resonate with you? Pay attention to camera angles and poses. Make notes of what you like and maybe what you don't. See if you can find reviews from past customers. Better yet call them! Being able to communicate clearly and effectively with your photographer is VERY important. You also want to be sure that you feel totally comfortable with them. Trusting your photographer (even when the poses feel awkward) will always make for better photos.

Engagement Session Tip 2: Pick a location that represents your unique couples style

The location of your engagement session is just about as important as your picking your photographer. It's important to keep your unique couples style in mind when choosing where to take your photos. If your couples style is more outdoor adventurers the woods or mountains might be a great location for you. If your couples style is more laid back maybe opt for the beach or even an in home session.

Engagement Session Tip 3: Wear something you are comfortable in

Being comfortable is key! If you don't love wearing 6 inch heels don't wear them! Throw your cowgirl boots on, or your sparkly sandals or cute flats. If you feel comfortable in what you're wearing you will be more relaxed during your session which will make for better pictures.

Engagement Session Tip 4: Include your fur babies

Including your pets in your engagement session can make for some seriously adorable pictures. Having your pets in the photos can provide some fantastic spontaneous moments. Personally I feel like those make the best pictures. Plus it's a great way to include them in this very special time in your life since they most likely won't make the wedding guest list.

Engagement Session Tip 5: Have fun!

Let's face it, planning a wedding can be stressful! It's important to remember what it's all for. In the end it's a celebration of your love. Your engagement photos should be a reflection of that. So when picture day comes take a deep breath! Know that you have done everything you needed to do up to that point. All you have to do now is smile and stare lovingly into your partner's eyes (awww...).
